Our Hero Lactoferrin

The molecule lactoferrin resembles a complex, patterned butterfly - just as versatile and intricate are the functions it performs in the body. A large part of its role relates to supporting the still-developing immune system of newborns: lactoferrin can directly inhibit bacteria and viruses, block their entry into the body, or stop their proliferation. Lactoferrin is extensively researched - more than 10,000 scientific publications document the wide range of applications of this immune protein. One thing all studies have in common, however, is that lactoferrin shows no adverse effects.

Lactoferrin and iron metabolism

Lactoferrin is able to bind and release iron through two high-affinity, reversible iron-binding sites. In this way, the protein specifically supports the transport and bioavailability of iron in the body. Lactoferrin therefore acts as a regulator: too much free iron can contribute to the formation of harmful free radicals, while too little iron can lead to issues such as fatigue or a weakened immune system.

Efficient iron utilization is essential for blood formation and the body’s energy supply. Iron-deficiency anemia is one of the most common deficiency conditions worldwide and can lead to fatigue, reduced concentration, and decreased performance. Studies suggest that lactoferrin supports iron absorption and may improve the tolerability of iron supplements.

Lactoferrin is not only an iron transporter but also a powerful anti-inflammatory immune protein. It inhibits IL-6, a pro-inflammatory signaling protein (cytokine) that stimulates the production of hepcidin during inflammation. Hepcidin is a hormone that reduces iron absorption and release in the body - excess levels can lead to iron deficiency. By inhibiting IL-6, lactoferrin may help reduce hepcidin-driven inflammatory processes and ultimately address iron deficiency at its underlying cause.

Lactoferrin and immune defense

As a natural component of the immune system, lactoferrin supports the regulation of immune processes and strengthens the body’s natural defenses. Physiologically, it is part of the immune system’s first line of defense and is therefore found in almost all body fluids, such as saliva and tears. Produced by immune cells, lactoferrin acts as a unique modulator that specifically supports immune function.

Lactoferrin can interact directly with receptors on immune cells and help regulate their activity. In this way, inflammatory responses are kept in balance while pathogens are targeted more effectively. In addition, lactoferrin can act directly: it exhibits antimicrobial properties by damaging the membranes of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, and by depriving them of essential nutrients through iron binding.

Human studies also show that taking lactoferrin capsules can increase the activity of natural killer cells and may help prevent infectious diseases or alleviate their symptoms.

The most important effect, however, takes place in the gut: lactoferrin modulates the intestinal immune system, which hosts up to 80% of the body’s immune cells. In this way, systemic immunity is strengthened and the protection of the entire body is improved.

In summary, lactoferrin provides anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects that support both the local immune system - i.e. the defenses at key entry points for pathogens such as the gut, mouth, or respiratory tract - and the systemic immune system throughout the body.

Lactoferrin and the microbiome

In newborns, lactoferrin supports the optimal development and colonization of the gut microbiome. One particularly fascinating property is its ability to distinguish between “beneficial” and “harmful” microorganisms within the microbiome. It selectively promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as bifidobacteria, while at the same time inhibiting potentially harmful bacteria. In this way, it helps strengthen the microbiome in a targeted manner.

This has also been confirmed in scientific studies. Lactoferrin has been shown to reduce potentially harmful fungi, viruses, and bacteria in the gut. At the same time, beneficial symbiotic bacteria are not only preserved but may even be specifically supported in their growth.

This ability is thought to be based on the long co-evolution between lactoferrin and the human organism, which has enabled the protein to differentiate between beneficial and harmful microorganisms.

What is lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin is a multifunctional iron-binding glycoprotein that has been part of the immune system of all mammals, including humans, for millions of years. Lactoferrin belongs to the transferrin family, as it is able to bind iron and release it in a reversible manner.

Its properties are highly diverse, making lactoferrin a highly functional supplement. It has been extensively studied - more than 10,000 scientific publications document its wide range of applications as an immune protein. One common aspect across studies is that lactoferrin has shown no negative effects.

The main functions of lactoferrin relate to iron metabolism, the immune system, and the gut microbiota. Considering that these three areas are essential for the entire body, lactoferrin may be a valuable companion in a wide range of life situations.

Where is lactoferrin found?

Lactoferrin is found in the milk of most mammals, with the highest concentrations present in human breast milk, particularly in colostrum. The lactoferrin content in human milk is about ten times higher than in cow’s milk.

It is also present in most body fluids, such as nasal secretions, tears, saliva, urine, and uterine fluid. In addition, lactoferrin is released into the bloodstream by activated immune cells (neutrophils) during inflammation.

Lactoferrin is considered an important component of the innate immune system - not only for infants, but for all age groups.

Why is the lactoferrin powder in the capsule not white?

Lactoferrin is also known as the “red protein,” because although it is isolated from white milk, this protein has a subtle salmon-pink color. This is due to its ability to bind iron. Depending on the level of iron saturation, the color can vary between different shades of lactoferrin.

Why have I never heard of lactoferrin before?

In Asia, lactoferrin has been used for decades in premium infant nutrition as well as in high-quality foods such as yogurt and dietary supplements. In Europe, this development has only become more established in recent years. As a result, lactoferrin is still relatively unknown to many people in this region. Our goal is to change that and raise awareness of this exceptional immune protein among a wider audience.

There is certainly no lack of scientific evidence. Lactoferrin is one of the most extensively studied immune proteins. More than 10,000 scientific publications document its wide range of properties and applications.

Is lactoferrin the same as iron?

No, iron is a chemical element, while lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein. Lactoferrin itself contains a small amount of iron, but it can bind, transport, and release significantly more iron within the body.

Lactoferrin is part of the transferrin family and is the only iron-transporting protein of this type that can be taken in capsule form.

Is lactoferrin included in all your products?

No, lactoferrin is specifically included in our capsules and in our Protein Base, ensuring the body receives a daily functional amount of lactoferrin. Our other products each focus on their own key active ingredients, which can be optimally combined with lactoferrin.

Why are your lactoferrin capsules cheaper than competitor products?

Because we can. As one of the world’s largest and oldest manufacturers of lactoferrin, we have decades of experience in producing this special protein. From the very beginning, our goal has been to offer a high-dose product with excellent value for money while maintaining the highest quality. Since we produce our lactoferrin ourselves and distribute it without intermediaries, we are able to offer this quality at a fair price. Our expertise is reflected not only in the price, but above all in the quality and effectiveness of our lactoferrin.

What should I consider when taking lactoferrin?

It is best to take lactoferrin at least 30 minutes before or 3 hours after a meal, ideally on an empty stomach. This allows it to pass through the stomach quickly and enables lactoferrin to exert its effects in the gut without interference from food components or digestive enzymes.
