Little Friends Bifidobacteria

Bifidobacteria produce organic acids such as acetic acid, which help promote a balanced microbiome and inhibit the growth of undesirable microbes. As important probiotic microorganisms, they not only contribute to stabilizing the gut microbiota but also support the body’s natural defenses in a sustainable way.

Acetic acid not only acts as an antimicrobial against potentially harmful bacteria (pathogens), it also supports intestinal motility and strengthens the gut barrier function. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory properties and helps gently regulate blood sugar via the activation of GLP-1 - a gut hormone that promotes insulin secretion and influences satiety.

These positive effects on the intestinal environment, the immune system, and even weight management make bifidobacteria valuable probiotics for greater overall well-being. However, their proportion in the gut decreases significantly over the course of life. When bifidobacteria are lacking, the gut microbiome can fall out of balance. Targeted supplementation can help support microbial balance and promote the gut’s natural protective function.

Bifidobacteria and inulin: a powerful combination

Bifidobacteria are able to break down and utilize inulin. This occurs via the so-called “bifid shunt” - a metabolic pathway that leads to the production of acetate and lactate. These metabolites are highly relevant for the intestinal environment: they lower the pH level, thereby creating a milieu that favors the growth of acid-tolerant and often beneficial bacterial species.

The key factor, however, is the principle of cross-feeding. Acetate and lactate produced during bifidobacterial inulin fermentation serve as a nutrient source for other beneficial bacteria, such as Faecalibacterium and Roseburia. These bacteria support the energy supply of intestinal cells, help stabilize tight junctions (the closely connected cell structures of the intestinal barrier), and contribute to the regulation of inflammatory processes.

Overall, inulin acts as a selective ecological driver: it enhances the activity of bifidobacteria and, through metabolic network effects, contributes to the stabilization of the intestinal barrier and immune homeostasis (the balance of the immune system in the gut). In this way, inulin specifically supports beneficial gut bacteria and strengthens both digestion and immune function.

Bifidobacteria: diversity and quality

Probiotics are classified by genus, species, and strain. Among the most common species are bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. However, what is crucial is that the biological effects of probiotics are strain-specific. The safety and health effects of one strain cannot simply be transferred to another.

An increasing body of scientific research suggests that probiotics of human origin - so-called human-residential bifidobacteria (HRB) on human host, i.e. strains originally native to the human gut - may offer particularly beneficial health properties. Therefore, it is important to select a high-quality probiotic strain of human origin that shows strong survival rates in the gut and has clinically documented safety and efficacy data.

Equally important is the correct dosage: the effective amount can vary significantly. With gut bacteria, more is not always better.

Bifidobacteria are among the most important gut bacteria for human health. However, their proportion in the gut steadily decreases with age and due to an imbalanced lifestyle. Therefore, targeted supplementation can be useful to support microbial balance and help maintain the natural levels of these important bacteria.

An overview of our specially selected bacterial strains

  1. Bifidobacterium longum BB536:
This strain supports the intestinal barrier and the balance of the gut microbiota, while helping to reduce inflammatory processes in the gut - making it potentially beneficial in cases of general intestinal irritation. It also helps regulate the immune response, exerts anti-inflammatory effects, and inhibits harmful microbes through the production of lactic acid.
  2. Bifidobacterium breve M-16V:
This strain supports the maturation of the immune system in infants and may help modulate allergic reactions such as atopic dermatitis later in life. At the same time, it promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids, which serve as nourishment for intestinal cells, and helps prevent pathogens from spreading in the body. In this way, it contributes to the development of a stable and resilient immune system.
  3. Bifidobacterium infantis M-63:
This probiotic strain is considered to be particularly well adapted to the human gut microbiome. It is especially effective in improving the colonization of the intestine with bifidobacteria, thereby supporting a stable, low-inflammatory gut microbiota. By lowering the intestinal pH, it helps protect against pathogens and promotes a harmonious interplay between digestion, immune function, and mental well-being.

Bifidobacteria - what really matters

The amount of bifidobacteria is closely linked to our health: in a healthy newborn, the gut microbiome consists of around 50–70% bifidobacteria. In adulthood in industrialized countries, their proportion averages only about 10%, and in older adults it can drop to below one percent.

Over the course of life, the share of bifidobacteria declines significantly - especially if breastfeeding did not take place or if factors such as an unhealthy diet, stress, antibiotics, illness, or certain medications are added.

However, it is not only the quantity that matters, but also the origin. Bifidobacteria have evolved over approximately 15 million years together with their hosts, including humans. A distinction is made between “human-resident” bifidobacteria, which have naturally inhabited the human gut since early evolution, and “non-human-resident” strains, which originate in other animals. It is therefore reasonable to assume that human-resident, species-specific bifidobacteria are better adapted to humans than non-human strains.

Nutrition remains the foundation

Even with high-quality supplementation, a balanced and varied diet remains the cornerstone of a healthy gut. Fiber, protein-rich foods, and healthy fats provide the essential nutrients needed to sustainably support the gut microbiome.

Why should I take bifidobacteria?

Bifidobacteria are among the most important beneficial gut bacteria. Their levels gradually decline over the course of life - factors such as stress, an unbalanced diet, medication, or an overall unhealthy lifestyle can accelerate this process. Targeted intake of bifidobacteria can help support microbial diversity in the gut, as key functions, including those associated with lactobacilli, are also covered by bifidobacteria.

Why are your probiotic capsules cheaper than competitor products?

Because we can. As the world’s oldest manufacturer of bifidobacteria, it is our mission to provide a high-dose product with strong value for money while maintaining the highest quality. Since we produce our bifidobacteria ourselves and distribute them without intermediaries, we are able to offer this quality at a fair price. Our expertise is reflected not only in the price, but above all in the quality and effectiveness of our bifidobacteria.

Why do your probiotic capsules not contain lactobacilli?

The combination of bacterial strains must be investigated in clinical studies: In our studies, we were able to show that the selected bifidobacterial strains act synergistically and do not inhibit each other. Many probiotic bacteria can inhibit one another, especially when they come from different bacterial families, such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. For this reason, we have deliberately chosen a targeted combination of selected bifidobacterial strains.

What should I consider when taking probiotics?

In general, it is recommended to take probiotics in a way that minimizes exposure to stomach acid during passage. Therefore, we recommend taking our Little Friends ideally on an empty stomach. Just as important as the timing of intake is consistency. Daily, regular use plays a key role in the long-term effect of probiotics.

How many bifidobacteria species exist and where do they naturally occur?

The genus Bifidobacterium comprises around 80 species, including 10 subspecies, which naturally occur in the human or animal gut. In general, bifidobacteria play a central role in regulating intestinal, immune, and metabolic functions. However, not all bifidobacteria are the same, and not all species have identical beneficial effects. The positive functions of bifidobacteria are strain-specific and depend on their natural habitat.

Which dosage form of probiotics is best and most effective?

Regardless of the dosage form, the most important factor is that probiotics contain live and active bacterial strains. What matters most is that the probiotic bacteria remain viable and are not significantly damaged during the manufacturing process. For this reason, acid-resistant capsules are the best choice: they help protect the sensitive bacteria during passage through the stomach and deliver them directly to the intestine.

How many probiotics reach the human gut?

The human gastrointestinal tract and gut environment vary from person to person, so no exact number can be given. What is important is ensuring that as many bacteria as possible reach the intestine. Since our Little Friends contain a high number of bacteria and the capsules are acid-resistant, a high level of bioavailability can be expected.

Why should even healthy people take probiotics daily?

Even in healthy individuals, continuous intake of probiotics can be beneficial, as the gut microbiota is constantly influenced by diet, stress, and environmental factors. Daily intake is also important for long-term support of the gut flora, as these bacteria are typically eliminated by the body within a few days to weeks.

Is an overdose of probiotics harmless?

Numerous clinical studies have confirmed the safety of slightly higher amounts of probiotic bacteria in participants. However, an overdose does not necessarily lead to better results and may instead cause mild side effects such as bloating, a feeling of fullness, and nausea. Therefore, it is recommended to take an appropriate amount of probiotics with clinically proven efficacy.

Why are probiotics effective for both constipation and diarrhea?

In contrast to conventional medications that typically act in one direction, probiotics help support the gut microbiota in restoring balance. As a result, they can be beneficial for both constipation and diarrhea by helping to modulate the gut toward a healthy, normal state.
